Cholesterol versus Lp(a)
Cholesterol-LDL or bad cholesterol has been getting the rap
until now for heart attacks. But researchers are now beginning
to recognize that Lp(a) a member of the LDL family carries an
additional risk.
Framington research study on a group of women has shown that
a very high Lp(a) level of 35 to 40 more than doubled the risk
of heart attack. Tufts University in a study of patients with
premature coronary artery disease showed that there was a excess
of Lp(a) in 19 percent of the group.
Lp(a)'s are troublesome due to their unique design. Ordinary
LDL is a ball of cholesterol wrapped by a strand of a protein.
As LDL goes through the artery, this protein can latch onto plaque
and deliver the cholesterol payload. Lp(a) has an extra protein
strand that's shaped like a natural clotbuster in the blood.
Since plaques are known to contain blood clots, scientists suspect
this look-alike protein actually tricks blockages into soaking
up more cholesterol instead of clotbuster.
Special blood tests can identify the problem, but neither a low
fat diet or most drugs will change the high levels of Lp(a)'s.
The exceptions are doctor supervised doses of the B vitamin Niacin,
and for women past menopause, Estrogen.
