Women have long heard about the importance of calcium for building
strong bones and preventing osteoporosis, a condition that affects

potential significance of vitamin D. Researchers at the Brigham
and Women's Hospital in Boston studied 98 post-menopausal women
and found that those who suffered hip fractures had lower levels
of vitamin D than those who did not. Of the 30 women with hip
fractures in the study, half had problematically low levels of
the nutrient, which plays a critical role in maintaining bones
by helping the body absorb calcium. The researchers also suggest
that the vitamin may help to better heal osteoporosis-related
fractures and prevent their recurrence. "While there is
increased awareness about the importance of calcium nutrition
for skeletal health, these data suggest that deficient vitamin
D levels should be of concern in women admitted with hip fractures,"
the authors write in the April 28th issue of the Journal of the
American Medical Association. But vitamin D is not important
only for women who have suffered broken hips. "We cannot
lose sight of the fact that vitamin D deficiency is preventable,"
says Dr. Meryl LeBoff, Director of the hospital's Skeletal Health
and Osteoporosis Program and lead author of the new study. "It
is critical that we heighten public awareness of the importance
of vitamin D nutrition to optimize skeletal health at all ages."
