What is Thalassotherapy?

Thalassa is the Greek word for sea, coined by the nineteenth century French physician Dr. Stephan Bonnardiere, who advised that soaking in salt water and seaweed and breathing sea air was a excellent way to maintain good health. This philosophy is based on the principle that elements found in salt water and marine plants are similar to the chemical makeup of human plasma, which allows us to absorb and assimilate the many minerals and nutrients, such as potassium, calcium and iodine that are good for hair, skin and the whole body. The nutrients found in seaweed are in greater concentrations than those found in land plants.

The famous spas of Europe use thalassotherapy for everything from improving the complexion to reducing cellulite, skin disorders, and joint problems. Seaweeds are the oldest family of plants on the planet and provide us a source for natural bio-available nutrients that are as effective as they are easy to use.

Thalassotherapy is an ancient practice of using the oceans bountiful gifts in renewing and restoring both body and soul. The Spas of the world are rediscovering the benefits of thalassotherapy and it is once again making its way into the spotlight. We are at the forefront of that trend and the first to design profession quality products for use in the home. The Home Spa Experience products are simple to use and yet you can experience the same exciting results you would expect to receive at a upscale spa.

Salts

Israeli Dead Sea Salt: Dead Sea Salt is a dry, natural white crystal harvested from the Southern Dead Sea where the concentration of minerals are the highest. The waters of the Dead Sea are unique, having a total salt concentration that is 10 times higher than ocean water, reaching 33% versus 3%. But that's not all! The composition of the brines is also unique, comprised of magnesium, potassium and calcium chlorides, in addition to a high concentration of bromides.

Some physicians now recommend Dead Sea Salt to relieve the symptoms of dry skin disorders (such as Psoriasis and Eczema), high blood pressure, rheumatoid arthritis, even joint and muscle pain. Mixed with true lavender essential oil it is also a great sleep inducer, salt is vital for sleep regulation because it is a natural hypnotic.

Medical research and multiple studies have proven beyond all doubt the efficacy of these minerals in treating and preventing various diseases such as psoriasis, acne, and rheumatism. Dead Sea salt is beneficial to the skin and the rest of the body. The largest organ in the body, the skin seems to have the most noticeable effect from Dead Sea Salts. The skin absorbs Dead Sea Salt, vitamins and other substances into the body. It is universally accepted these Dead Sea Salts and vitamins can have a wonderful effect on circulation and metabolism.

The beneficial effects of the Dead Sea salts on the skin and their unique therapeutic and beautifying powers have been recognized since ancient times. Cleopatra, considered the most beautiful woman in the world, went to great expense to obtain exclusive rights over the Dead Sea area. At her command, pharmaceutical and cosmetic factories were built near the Dead Sea. Their remains can still be seen today at Ein Bokek and Ein Gedi.

There's nothing like a soak in a Dead Sea Salt bath. This practice was once relegated to high-end spas and expensive skin clinics, but now therapeutic salt baths are becoming common practice in homes all across America.

Sea Vegetables

Kelp (Laminaria digitata): Our kelp grows deep in the cold sub-tidal waters of Northwestern Iceland. It is also distinguished by being the only kelp currently available that is sustainably harvested, dried, milled and bagged following the organic standards of QAI (Quality Assurance International) in the U.S., and TUN, the local Icelandic certifier.

Bladderwrack (Fucus vesiculosis): Bladderwrack has a long tradition of use by herbalists to aid in weight loss and thyroid stimulation and is a source of fucoidan. Our bladderwrack is harvested in New Brunswick and Nova Scotia, Canada.

Sea vegetables have been used for centuries in Japanese and Chinese medicine, and recent scientific studies have started to verify this tradition usage. Some studies involve sea vegetables anti-tumor activity, cholesterol-lowering abilities, effectiveness in treating radiation and heavy metal poisoning, some therapeutic effect on the inflammatory response, particularly in tissue wounds. Thalassotherapy in European spas and seaweed baths in the British Isles have been traditional methods of relieving muscle and joint pains. Fucoidan, a water soluble compound found in brown algae, has been shown to interfere with every stage of viral attack: cell attachment, cell penetration, and viral intracellular penetration.

Each year all our seaweeds are tested for 42 different chemical pollutants, 34 different insecticides, and 9 different herbicides. No unusual traces of any compound covered by these tests have been detected in our seaweeds. They are also tested for heavy metals. Some studies indicate that seaweed may even help eliminate heavy metals already stored in the body. All seaweeds are regularly tested to make sure there are no harmful microorganisms occurring during the drying, storing or packaging process. We do have the test sheets and certificates of analysis for each of our seaweeds.
